This week at JRN

Notes from the Editor

Hi {{first_name|JRN Community}},

It's a quieter week on the rowing calendar, but honestly, after the winter we've had, there's something to be said for that. The weather here in the UK is finally starting to turn, the clocks have changed, and there's that familiar feeling in the air that the season is properly coming. Sport has felt like one of the few reliable anchors of late. With conflicts continuing to rage across the globe and the news cycle doing what it does, there's something grounding about the simple rhythm of blade in water.

This week, we're covering two regattas: The Schools’ Regatta in Ireland, where some of the finest young talent in the sport will be putting it all on the line, and the King's Cup Invitational over in the US. Both are arguably warm-up acts for a fully-loaded summer of racing, but the early-season form book is one we will recount throughout the course of the next three months.

The real excitement, though, is just around the corner. Next week, the schedule kicks into a higher gear, and we'll have a lot more to bring you (including UK coverage of BUCS Regatta, Wallingford Regatta, Junior Sculling Regatta plus US regional youth championship content).

As always, everything you need is right here in your inbox.

The season has already been disrupted by the weather, with Skibbereen called off and the University Championships reduced to eights only. O'Brien's Bridge in Limerick provides the backdrop, and the stakes are high.

🇺🇸 2026 King’s Cup Invitational

This weekend, Overpeck County Park in New Jersey hosts the King's Crown Rowing Association Invitational: a sprint regatta featuring 58 clubs across 14 events. It's a solid marker in the Northeast calendar, offering crews on the East Coast a competitive early-season test as the sprint season gets underway.

🇺🇸 2026 US Collegiate Rowing

Week Four of the IRA calendar produced some of the most dramatic results of the season so far, with three top-ten teams falling to lower-ranked opponents. On the women's side, the Big Ten Invite on Lake Natoma was the weekend's centrepiece.

The Catch-up

The Lifestyle Series: Nutrition beyond trends

Heavy legs, persistent fatigue, a recovery score that never bounces back; it's easy to blame the training block. But what if the culprit is smaller than you think? Hannah Holliday cuts through the noise on micronutrients and takes aim at the greens powder industry while she's at it.

Ergs, edits and algorithms: what rowing content creators want you to know

Rowing was once defined by geography and gatekeeping. Social media has changed that, but how, and at what cost? With insights from Cam Buchan, Jack Burns and others, Thomas Jagger explores the real motivations behind rowing's growing online community.
