Notes from the Editor

Hi {{first_name|JRN Community}},

Whether you were one of the lucky few who felt the summer months flowed endlessly, or a member of the far larger contingent wishing they could rewind to a simpler, sunnier time on the banks of rivers and lakes across the globe, the reality now is simple: it’s time for a new season to begin.

Here at JRN, we’re ready.

Our biggest team - now over 250 contributors across all of our various exploits - are kicking into gear to deliver the highest-quality, original rowing content anywhere on the internet.

Of particular interest for us this year is our new-look Catch team who, under the stewardship of Dom McGrory, have already begun to evolve our offering with pieces that answer the questions we’re all asking (just see the articles in this email).

Alex McMullen, who previously led The Catch, now assumes global responsibility for our racing content teams. Alex and her regional leads have mapped out a detailed calendar for the first part of the season, with more coverage than ever.

We’re also working on some very exciting projects - we can’t too say much yet, but watch this space…

In the meantime, enjoy this week’s edition as we ease you back into the new season.

See you next week,

The Editor

The Catch-up

📺 Rowing’s Netflix Moment Finally Arrived: Did Crew Girl Waste It?

Courtesy of Netflix

"Netflix’s new eight-part series Crew Girl feels like a rare opportunity to finally introduce rowing to a wider audience, presented from the perspective of a young female athlete. It has all the ingredients for a story about women in sport, teamwork, ambition and the complicated relationship that rowing has with privilege. Instead, we get a love triangle, old money, bribery, and an extraordinary obsession with stroke seat.”

📜 The State of The Union: UK Rowing Heading Into The 2026/27 Season

“There is a version of this conversation that is conducted in hushed tones over a jug of Pimm’s at the end of a Saturday afternoon at Henley Royal Regatta. Whether British Rowing is heading in the right direction. Whether the right schools, universities and clubs are winning. Whether the same names keep appearing because they deserve to, or because nobody has found a way to dethrone them.”
